On Tuesday, September 23, 2014, there was a buzz in the air at a movie theatre in Halifax, Nova Scotia – not due to a new Hobbit or Star Wars movie being released, but because the Startup Empire conference was happening. Put on by Volta, who provides mentorship and support to new startup and potential entrepreneurs in the area, this conference promised attendees the chance to hear, learn from and be inspired by some of the brightest names in the industry. It didn’t disappoint. Although I myself am not starting a business, I went because I wanted to get a sense of both the local startup scene, as well as absorb anything I could from these successful businessmen and women – and that’s exactly what I got.

IN CLOSING – This conference was extremely worthwhile and insightful, in a way unlike anything I’ve attended before. The fact that we were able to get this amazing group of speakers here in Halifax (which sort of felt like bringing in big name music acts to our little city) who have seen entrepreneurial success on a global scale is quite remarkable. And that’s just it – we here in Atlantic Canada can and should compete with startup scenes all over the world, and we need to for our own sake. So cheers to you, entrepreneurs and Startup Empire – I’m already looking forward to next year!
