What is Hoist?
Hoist sessions are led by industry experts and are designed to help teens explore and expand their interests in technology and entrepreneurship. Workshops develop skills in design, coding, game development, and much more.
Hoist sessions take place one Saturday a month (except for July, August and December) and are targeted at teens ages 12 to 19.
Topics change each month and are based on current trends, as well as the needs and interests of Hoist participants. This helps make each session unique and fun for the participants.
February’s Topic: Basics of Financial Literacy
Rebeccah Slaunwhite and Yuri Singh will provide the students with a crash course on banking concepts during this interactive session. They will kick things off with a short presentation followed by games on financial literacy to help students understand the concepts better.
Rebeccah Slaunwhite – Grew up in Mi’kma’ki. Leads RBC On Campus at Dalhousie University and Co-Chairs RBC Atlantic Royal Eagles. Partner at Indigenous Treaty partners and sits on the Impact Organizations of Nova Scotia board of directors. Over nine years of retail, service, management, and administration experience.
Yuri Singh – Moved from India and came to Canada as an international student to pursue post-secondary education. Currently working as a Digital Banking Advisor at RBC OnCampus, helping students and different groups in the community with financial needs while doing workshops and presentations on Financial Education. Worn many hats over the years working in different fields, gaining experience in customer service, sales, financial services and event management. Deeply passionate about community engagement, relationship building and helping people.

The Pitch Competition is an excellent opportunity to practice your three-minute pitch, fine-tune your deck, and get feedback from peers and industry experts. You will gain valuable experience presenting to investors, and potential early adopters. Plus, you never know who may be tuning in to watch!
The Pitch Competition is open to Volta Residents, Network Members and anyone from the tech community in Atlantic Canada.
Each competition will have a judging panel, comprised of entrepreneurs and community leaders. Judges will focus on the quality and content of the presentation, not the viability of the business.
The winning pitch will receive :
- $500 Visa gift card
- Their name engraved on Volta’s Pitch Competition trophy
