The future of tech is undeniably AI-driven, and Volta is stepping up to ensure Atlantic Canadian founders are at the forefront of this innovation. Today, we are excited to announce the launch of the AI-First Startup Support Program, a new initiative aimed at accelerating the growth of AI-powered startups across the region. This program is launched in partnership with Dalhousie University’s Faculty of Computer Science, a leading institution in AI research and education.

Why Focus on AI-First Startups?

AI-first startups are a unique breed. Unlike traditional startups, these companies integrate artificial intelligence into the very fabric of their business models, products, and operations. From day one, AI forms the foundation for innovation, decision-making, and problem-solving. With the rapid advancements in generative AI, particularly over the past few years, the potential for startups leveraging this technology is immense.

Volta CEO Matt Cooper explains:

“The rapid advancements in Generative AI make it essential for Volta and our partners to provide the right support to help Atlantic Canadian founders navigate the complexities of building AI-powered products. The AI-First Startup Support Program is our response to the growing community interest and the massive opportunity that AI represents.”

What Does the Program Offer?

The AI-First Startup Support Program is designed to help startups leverage AI and bring their innovations to market faster. Using our proven residency model, this program provides individualized mentorship, resources, and hands-on support. Key elements include:

  • Expert Guidance: Access to experienced mentors who specialize in AI and startup growth.
  • Workshops and Resources: Tailored sessions delivered by Dalhousie’s Faculty of Computer Science, including technical workshops and resources that are essential for AI development.
  • Talent Pipeline: Tap into Dalhousie’s talented pool of computer science students through ShiftKey Labs, a hub for AI-related learning and experiential opportunities.

Who Should Apply?

The program is geared towards startups that integrate AI into their core offering and are based in Atlantic Canada. Ideal applicants should:

  • Targeted Problem Solving: The team must have a clear target customer and problem to solve.
  • Location: At least one co-founder should be based in Atlantic Canada.
  • Technical Expertise: The startup must have a technical co-founder capable of building AI solutions.
  • AI at the Core: AI must be integral to your product and its innovation.
  • Scalability: Your solution should be designed to scale in user base, data processing, and functionality.
  • Ethical Development: Commit to building AI ethically, ensuring fairness and transparency.
  • Commitment: Each team member must dedicate at least 20 hours per week to the startup.

This initiative isn’t just about ideas—it’s about execution. Startups will be evaluated every 90 days based on their progress, ensuring that the program’s resources go to teams that are actively moving the needle.

Our Partnership with ShiftKey Labs

Our collaboration with Dalhousie University is a key component of this program’s success. As a leading institution in computer science education and research, Dalhousie provides an invaluable pipeline of talent, resources, and knowledge to AI-first startups. According to Emily Fenton, Manager of ShiftKey Labs:

“This collaboration will give Computer Science students valuable access to Volta’s tried and true methodology, while opening up ShiftKey Labs’ AI-related events to the broader tech community. We’re excited to make Generative AI more accessible than ever.”

A Student-Focused Future

In addition to the primary AI-First Startup Support Program, we’re also developing a student-focused version in collaboration with ShiftKey Labs and Dalhousie’s Faculty of Computer Science. This initiative aims to foster the next generation of AI innovators, providing students with a hands-on startup environment to apply their skills.

What’s a Rich Text element?

The rich text element allows you to create and format headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, images, and video all in one place instead of having to add and format them individually. Just double-click and easily create content.

Static and dynamic content editing

A rich text element can be used with static or dynamic content. For static content, just drop it into any page and begin editing. For dynamic content, add a rich text field to any collection and then connect a rich text element to that field in the settings panel. Voila!

How to customize formatting for each rich text

Headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, figures, images, and figure captions can all be styled after a class is added to the rich text element using the "When inside of" nested selector system.
